Jacksonville publishes more crash data about itself than most American cities, and the picture it paints is blunt. Between 2018 and 2023 the city recorded 196,453 crashes, including 921 deaths and 2,770 serious injuries.
The intersections police get called to most
The Sheriff’s Office publishes an annual list of the city’s highest-frequency crash locations. The most recent one is headed by Main Street North at State Street West with 483 crashes, followed by Blanding Boulevard at Argyle Forest Boulevard (337), University Boulevard West at Philips Highway (221), State Street East at Liberty Street (208) and Baymeadows Road at Southside Boulevard (196).
One caveat the Sheriff’s Office attaches, and we will repeat: those totals count every reported collision, not only serious ones. A high number tells you a junction generates crashes. It does not by itself tell you how badly people were hurt there.
Philips Highway, Normandy Boulevard and walking after dark
The city has singled out Philips Highway (US 1) as a particularly difficult pedestrian corridor — a commuter route that doubles as the way people reach shops and bus stops on foot. Normandy Boulevard has been pushed to the top of the city’s priority safety list, with FDOT running a study toward a first phase near Yellow Water Road.
More than 60 percent of Jacksonville’s pedestrian deaths happen in dark conditions. The metro ranks 16th most dangerous in the country for pedestrians, with 287 deaths between 2020 and 2024.
Darkness is not a legal defense, though it is often argued as one. Street lighting records, the presence or absence of a marked crossing, and the distance to the nearest safe one are all obtainable — and all matter.
Port and bridge traffic
JAXPORT moved more than 506,000 vehicles in 2025 and ranks among the busiest US ports for vehicle handling. On the interstate side, daily traffic over the Fuller Warren Bridge climbed from about 155,000 to 170,000 vehicles as downtown I-95 volumes grew; FDOT’s interchange project widened it from three lanes to four each way specifically to reduce weaving.
The Fourth Circuit and UF Health TraumaOne
Duval County injury suits are heard in the Fourth Judicial Circuit at the Duval County Courthouse, 501 West Adams Street. The region’s Level I trauma center is UF Health Jacksonville, whose TraumaOne program was Florida’s first, established in 1983, and is the only adult and paediatric Level I center in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
Two years to file
Florida negligence claims now carry a two year deadline, halved from four in March 2023, and a claimant found more than half responsible recovers nothing at all. Below that line damages are reduced by your share. Medical malpractice claims were left under the previous rule.
