The nearest Level I trauma center is not in Valdosta

This is the most important practical fact on this page. SGMC Health is a Level III trauma center, designated in June 2023 — there is no Level I or Level II center in Valdosta or Lowndes County. At the time of designation the nearest other trauma centers were 45 and 90 miles away.

For a severely injured patient that usually means stabilisation locally and transfer onward. For a claim it means the medical record is split across facilities, sometimes including an air ambulance bill, and every part of it has to be gathered before the full value of the injury can even be stated.
